AI in business; striking the right balance

Striking the right balance with AI in your business, and harnessing it’s power in a meaningful way, will real give your business a real edge.

There’s a lot of excitement around  Chat GPT and other AI content technology, which is creating new opportunities and efficiencies in business, notwithstanding its relative infancy. This powerful automation technology uses algorithms to create content by predicting the probability of text. From essay writing, to social media content creation, through to writing poetry, this technology is undoubtably going to revolutionise the way business interacts with technology.

A healthy dose of scepticism is to be expected, and is raising interesting questions about the authenticity of ideas, the impact of AI on intellectual property rights, confidentiality, and privacy risks.

We asked Chat GPT to tell us about the risks of using AI technology, but the response was a little ‘standard’.. so we thought we’d give you the Prisma version!

AI Tips

Before you jump into asking an AI platform, such as Chat GPT, to prepare documents or advice in your business, there are a few things you need to consider:

1. Accuracy and reliability: Chat GPT is a powerful tool when it comes to language modelling, but it’s not perfect. Errors and inaccuracies in the output is common. If you use AI to produce a ‘base document’, make sure it is reviewed and checked by a human being to verify accuracy, and technical efficacy. You can’t blame AI for providing negligent advice or for being in breach of other legal obligations!

2. Confidentiality and privacy: When you share personal information with AI, you’ve let the cat out of the confidentiality bag. Exercise discretion with the information you input into AI technology. You must consider the implications on your legal privacy obligations and your current privacy practices.

3. Maintain your human touch: AI will  improve efficiencies in businesses and be a powerful tool in your arsenal, however blind over-reliance comes at the risk of compromising the quality of technical and tailored expertise. AI can’t replace the skills and nuances of human expertise and lived experiences, nor will the product be tailored to the specific circumstances of the issue you’re dealing with. Considered use of the technology should mean that its use is integrated into your business to be used as a tool to achieve high quality outcomes, rather than be relied upon to yield template quality results.

4. Bias and fairness: AI output is based in the input and commands the user provides. The sophistication of input modelling is in its early stages. The unconscious bias implicit in commands could impact the result produced. The Chat GPT website does contain a warning that the website may “occasionally generate incorrect or misleading information and produce offensive or biased content”.

Guidance

Helpful resources to guide you in considering implementing policies in your business to ensure the ethical use of AI, whilst mitigating risk include:

The European Commission is developing a set of guidelines for the ethical use of AI and is considering a new legal framework to support regulation on the use of AI.

Australia has issued an Artificial Intelligence Framework, which is a voluntary framework containing aspirational recommendations and principals to be considered when using AI.

A balanced approach

Using AI as an enabling instrument, rather than a substitute for considered and tailored output, will ensure your use of the technology will improve efficiency in your business, without compromising on quality. Chat GPT and similar AI platforms can produce an impressive volume of output almost immediately based on pre-determined responses to input, however the output is not based on any consciousness or subjective experiences.

A considered and balanced approach is required to ensure you capitalise on the benefits provided by the technology, whilst ensuring you don’t expose your business to unnecessary risk.
